- We strongly condemn today’s United States Senate votes to overturn several of California’s clean vehicle standards, including Advanced Clean Trucks, Advanced Clean Cars II, and Heavy Duty Omnibus. By overruling the Senate parliamentarian and expanding the Congressional Review Act beyond its intended scope, the majority has set a dangerous precedent that threatens decades of environmental protections not only in California but in all states that have adopted California’s clean transportation standards, including New York and New Jersey.
- This unprecedented action, which disregarded guidance from both the Government Accountability Office and the Senate parliamentarian, represents a dangerous attack on public health and climate protection.
- But federal obstruction is no excuse for state inaction.
- New York, New Jersey have long been leaders on environmental and climate protection. We call on Governors Hochul, Murphy and legislative leaders in each state to stand strong and lead where Washington has failed. Inaction will only result in more children with asthma, more premature deaths, and ever worsening pollution in the communities that can least afford it.
- Our region represents an enormous share of the national auto market. We have the economic power to drive industry change, and our states have already committed to 100% zero-emission EV sales by 2035.
- We urge our state leaders to reaffirm their commitment to existing clean vehicle standards, explore state-level clean transportation policies, and coordinate regional action to maintain market pressure for cleaner vehicles.
- Federal obstruction cannot derail the clean transportation future our communities deserve. Our region’s leadership has never been more critical.
