A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in the tri-state region and beyond.
WINNERS
Jersey City & Long Island City — In its first expansion phase, Citi Bike is now running in Long Island City. The bike-sharing program will expand to Jersey City (finally) in September and will work in unison with NYC’s network.
ConnDOT — Connecticut’s first road diet is now underway. The four-lane Burnside Avenue will be transformed into a two-lane street with dedicated bike lanes, reconstructed sidewalks and relocated bus stops.
New Jersey Senator Ray Lesniak — Senator Lesniak’s bill will “give commuters a voice and vote” on the NJ Transit board, which has gone 12 years without any dissent on over 800 resolutions.
NYC Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer — The Queens councilmember is calling on the NYPD to stop car dealerships from blocking sidewalks with their inventory.
LOSERS
Bronx Parking Development Co. — “Hope” for Yankee Stadium’s underused parking garages might mean filling them with cars from Manhattan.
Connecticut Senator Toni Boucher — Senator Boucher, who once denied the existence of all-electronic open road tolling, blasted the Governor’s Transportation Finance Panel for considering a mileage tax.
NYC Department of Transportation — Why does it take so long to repaint bike lanes after streets are repaved?
Maybe God doesn’t like bike lane markings. Certainly true of Mother Nature.
