You’ve heard of the pedestrian bridge in Poughkeepsie, but did you know that New York’s Capital District has its own “Walkway over the Hudson?” Well, it used to anyway. Tri-State’s ally for a more sustainable transportation network, Parks & Trails New York, is working to make sure the Albany area gets this critical pedestrian and bicycling transportation connection back:

For nearly a century, a walkway on the Livingston Avenue Bridge provided a safe and easily accessible crossing over the Hudson River between Albany and Rensselaer. After suffering years of neglect, the walkway was closed to bicyclists and pedestrians roughly a decade ago.

The Livingston Avenue Bridge has reached the end of it’s lifespan, and a replacement is currently in design. It is imperative that this publicly funded bridge replacement accommodate the region’s needs for a safe and accessible bike and pedestrian network. A decade’s worth of studies have supported the replacement of the walkway and public support for the walkway is overwhelming. However, there is more work to be done. Amtrak, NYSDOT, and our representatives in all levels of government need to recognize the demand for the walkway and ensure it’s inclusion with the bridge replacement.
