Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in tri-state transportation news.

Winners

City of Norwalk (CT) — The City received a grant from the State of Connecticut to implement recommendations from the recently-completed, and Tri-State endorsed, transit-oriented development (TOD) plan and pedestrian and bicycle connectivity plan.

NJ Transit — The agency unveiled new “stretch” light rail vehicles for the Hudson-Bergen line that increase seating capacity by nearly 50 percent.

Nassau County — County Executive Edward Mangano and traffic safety officials released a safety video featuring Nassau residents who have lost loved ones to motorist-pedestrian crashes.

Losers

Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro — Despite the evidence that two-way streets encourage slower speeds and are better for local businesses than one-way streets, Molinaro proposed converting Bay Street, a busy commercial corridor, into a one-way street, saying “It’s to nobody’s advantage keeping that a two-way street.”

American Dream Meadowlands developer Triple 5 Worldwide — The developer, who still hasn’t committed to funding transit improvements, has no problem spending money to file suit against the Giants and the Jets for delaying the boondoggle megaproject. The Giants and Jets sued Triple 5 last month because they believe ADM would “clog the complex’s already congested transportation networks.”

Jeesh!! Still no bike racks on that new HBLR rolling stock. When is NJ TRANSIT going to learn to embrace bicyclists. “Bikes and Trains. Perfect together!”
