Winners

The Daily Freeman—In a fiery editorial, the Daily Freeman took New York State to task for pursuing a Tappan Zee Bridge project that, lacking an adequate transit component, does not solve the Lower Hudson Valley’s congestion problem.

Milford, Connecticut—Thanks to the City of Milford’s Planning and Zoning Board and Board of Aldermen, the Milford Transit District will soon be installing a new shelter for bus riders on Route 1 in Milford’s Devon section.

Park Ridge, New Jersey—The New Jersey borough is taking crucial steps towards becoming a Transit Village; most recently, the town authorized its planner to assemble an application for the initiative.

CLIMB—The Long Island cycling group has assembled over 640 signatures in support of a sidewalk and bike lane for West Shore Road in Oyster Bay. It remains to be seen if a full bike lane is feasible due to engineering constraints, but Nassau County and County Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton should think innovatively about how to better accommodate all users of the road along this corridor.

Losers

Former New York Governor George Pataki—Fifteen years after convening a task force that sought to find a solution to the I-287 congestion problem, former New York Governor George Pataki has endorsed a Tappan Zee Bridge project that will do little to ease the region’s traffic woes.

NJ Transit—After discovering a web application that told NJ Transit commuters their train’s platform location before its appearance on Penn Station information screens, the transit authority cut out that part of its public data feed, citing issues of safety and accuracy. NJ Transit has not announced plans to provide this information through alternate means.

Dean Street double parkers—Some local residents have pointed out that double parking on Brooklyn’s Dean Street has made the street dangerous for cyclists.
