Earlier this week, the New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV) released its “Blueprint for a Greener Long Island,” a document [pdf] that lays out the organization’s policy agenda for the region. The blueprint offers suggestions for local governments and policy makers that want to commit to sustainability, while also serving to bolster community efforts that have already made strides towards a greener Long Island.
In a region where leaders like Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and others have already begun embracing downtown revitalization projects and transit-oriented development, NYLCV is looking for more of the same. The group’s policy recommendations include the promotion of mixed-use projects in municipal centers, brownfield redevelopment, and accelerated review for some smart growth projects. With the Connect Long Island plan moving forward, Hempstead on the way to densifying its downtown, and countless other municipalities looking to create vibrant communities, the opportunity for more sustainable development continues to grow.
NYLCV’s plan also asks local officials to support the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) components of the MTA Capital Program, including East Side Access, the 3rd-tracking of the main line, and improved parking at certain stations. Without a doubt, for Long Island to grow in a more transit-oriented manner, LIRR improvements need strong support from elected officials, but leaders must also make improved bus service a priority. Addressing recent cuts to Nassau County’s bus system and strong public demand for year-round Sunday service on Suffolk County Transit should also be high on government officials’ priority lists.
