Smart Growth on Next Week’s Calendar

Don’t miss out on two smart growth events being organized by TSTC allies. Both are next Thursday, November 13:

The seventh annual Vision Long Island Smart Growth Summit will bring together community, professional, and government leaders who are working to promote the sensible growth that Long Island needs to solve pressing problems like a shortage of affordable housing and waves of foreclosures. During lunch Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and Jim Constantine of architectural firm Looney Ricks Kiss will speak, followed by a panel including Paul Beyer of the NYS Smart Growth Cabinet. The event also includes workshops on downtown revitalization, development projects of regional significance, transit-oriented development, and other topics. The event runs from 8am to 3pm at the Marriott in Melville, N.Y.

Fittingly, many of the workshops in 1000 Friends of Connecticut’s second annual Smart Growth Conference are more oriented on state policy issues like regional planning, brownfields, and property tax reform. The keynote speaker is Carol Coletta of CEOs for Cities (an organization which, this summer, released research linking the housing bubble to sprawl and the rise in gas prices). The conference runs from 8:30am to 4pm at the Omni Hotel in New Haven.
