A couple of weeks ago, MTR asked readers to come up with an evocative name for Tri-State’s forthcoming campaign to improve the walking conditions surrounding Penn Station. Currently, the streets and sidewalks surrounding the nation’s busiest rail station are inadequate at best. On top of supporting a plan put forward by Borough President Scott Stringer’s office to add sidewalk capacity and bike lanes to 33rd Street, Tri-State also supports the closing of 32nd Street between Greeley Square and Penn. We received dozens of entries on our website and by e-mail. To judge by their fervent nature, many people are as worked up about the issue as we are. Because we had many worthy contenders, we first have a couple of runners-up:
“Repennt!” from “Aaron.” Awe-inspiring and powerful, Aaron – but it scared those of us with a Catholic upbringing.
“Unherd the Penn” from Mark Plotch. Some of us were struck by the image of thousands of commuters bursting from the stable gates — like a business-attired running of the bulls — and spilling off the sidewalks into the street at high speeds in every direction, dodging confused drivers, speeding cabs and lollygagging tourists. Wait. That’s what happens every day.
