We, at Tri-State Transportation Campaign (TSTC) are deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic shooting that occurred on the L train on September 15, 2024, reportedly sparked by an incident of fare evasion. This senseless violence underscores the absurdity of a system that criminalizes poverty and perpetuates inequity, particularly against Black and Brown communities.
No one should face violence over the price of a subway fare. Public transportation is a lifeline for millions, especially for low-income individuals and communities of color, who are disproportionately impacted by fare evasion enforcement. Instead of punitive measures, we must work toward a transit system that is equitable and accessible to all.
This incident is a stark reminder of the need for a fair, just, and compassionate approach to addressing transit access. TSTC stands committed to fighting for policies that uplift the vulnerable and marginalized, ensuring that public transportation is a space of safety and equity for every rider.
TSTC calls on both Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul to rethink fare enforcement and invest in transit justice solutions that address the root causes of inequity, not criminalize those who are struggling to afford basic services.
