We are excited to honor Senator Loretta Weinberg and Senator Robert Gordon from New Jersey for their leadership on the Port Authority Bus Terminal replacement project. Senators Weinberg and Gordon have held extensive hearings and appeared numerous times before the Port Authority Board of Directors to address the inadequacies of the current bus terminal. They have acted as a voice for Garden State commuters, and their persistence has paid off. In July of 2014, the Directors reallocated $90 million within its current 10-year Capital Program for a Quality of Commute program to identity improvements for the existing terminal. Earlier this year in March, Weinberg and Gordon led a bipartisan effort to formally include the terminal in the 10-year Capital Program. Both senators collaborated across party lines in the New Jersey Legislature and with their New York colleagues in their continued efforts to secure Port Authority reform by passing a bill subjecting the agency to the New York Freedom of Information Law and the New Jersey Open Public Records Act. Their leadership has resulted in tremendous steps towards constructing a much-needed new bus terminal and transforming the Port Authority into a more transparent, accountable bi-state agency as it was intended to be.
This year’s honorees also include CTfastrak, Connecticut’s bus rapid transit system; and AECOM, an innovator on major transit projects in New York and around the globe.
