Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in the tri-state region and beyond.

Winners

New York State Senators Phil Boyle and Kenneth LaValle  Senators Boyle and LaValle wrote a letter to State Senator Joseph Robach, who is Chairman of the Transportation Committee, in support of a $10 million increase in State Transit Operating Assistance funding for Suffolk County Transit.

Connecticut Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey  The first step to healing is admitting you have a problem, and that’s just what Speaker Sharkey did last week. “I accept responsibility for voting for bills in an effort to try to balance the budget took money from the Special Transportation Fund and that was a bad decision,” Sharkey said. “Not only do we have to maintain the infrastructure, we have but expand it.”

New York State Senator Betty Little  The State Senate passed Senator Little’s mandate relief legislation that would give towns the flexibility to adjust speed limits on local roads without having to petition the New York State Department of Transportation.

Port Authority of New York & New Jersey  Thanks to a partnership with advocates in New Jersey and New York, the Port Authority will improve pedestrian and bicycle access to the George Washington Bridge as part of a major state-of-good-repair project.

Losers

Jersey City Councilmember Rich Boggiano  Councilmember Boggiano believes Jersey City’s red-light cameras are an invasion of privacy and has introduced a measure to have them taken down.

Alta Bicycle Share  The company that runs the New York City bike share program has “been slow to check and clean its bicycles, and to repair broken docking stations,” which violates the terms of its contract with the City. On top of that, it was announced today that Citi Bike General Manager Justin Ginsburgh is stepping down.
