Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in tri-state transportation news.

Winners

NJ State Senators Gerald Cardinale and Loretta Weinberg and NJ Assembly members Gordon Johnson and Holly Schepisi–The bipartisan group of New Jersey legislators are urging the Federal Transit Administration to extend the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system to Englewood, NJ.

New York State DOT–Last week NYSDOT held their first stakeholder outreach meeting on complete streets which will help inform the Agency’s implementation report-due in early 2014-as required by the 2011 law.

B44 Bus Riders–The SBS lanes being painted on Nostrand Avenue are a sure sign that bus service is about to improve for the route’s 40,000 daily bus riders.

New York State Senator Charles Fuschillo–The Transportation Committee Chair called for an increase in Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) funding which can be used for local roads, bridges, bicycle, pedestrian and traffic calming measures.

Losers

New York State Taxpayers–The Associated Press reports that Tappan Zee Bridge financing documents suggest motorists could be hit with a $14+ toll and that paying for the bridge might have to come from other state sources and higher interest loans.

East Rutherford, New Jersey–Despite being billed as an economic development project by supporters, American Dream Meadowlands-the mega-mall project that is more of a mega-menance-continues to threaten the finances of its host community.

United States Transportation Infrastructure–Twenty years ago this week, the federal gas tax was raised by 4.3 cents per gallon, and has remained flat ever since, despite increasing transportation costs and creaking infrastructure.

The Tappan Zee Bridge certainly would not be any cheaper if it had a heavy rail or light rail line on it. Not sure why TSTC is so upset that the drivers are going to have to pay for the cost of replacing the bridge or that taxpayers should also contribute to this needed infrastructure project. Get over the rail on the bridge issue and move on.
