Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project, New York City Council Member Tish James, New York State Assembly Member Joseph Lentol, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz—This week, Council Member James, Assembly Member Lentol, and representatives from Borough President Markowitz’s office appeared at an event focused on the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project plan to make Brooklyn’s Park Avenue safer for all users.

Salem County, New Jersey—Salem County Transit’s 18-mile short line railroad, which transports freight from Swedesboro (in Gloucester County) to Salem’s port and is crucial for over 1,400 jobs, will get $1.35 million in grant money for much-needed upgrades.

ConnDOT—In a move made possible by ConnDOT help, Westport Metro-North riders that take a shuttle bus to the station will now get “A Guaranteed Ride” to and from the train. Up to four times per year, shuttle users with monthly passes will be able to get a free taxi when an emergency makes sticking to the shuttle schedule impossible.

Losers

Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North commuters—According to a Citizens Budget Commission analysis of the recent payroll mobility tax ruling, which threatens over a billion dollars in MTA funding, LIRR and Metro-North riders could face higher fares, lower service, or both if the decision stands (and the MTA chooses to close the budget gap by altering commuter rail policy). To make up for lost revenues from downstate suburbs, some $459 million, LIRR fares would have to go up by 46% and Metro-North fares would have to go up by 32%.

Careless New Jersey drivers—Last week, “dozens of motorists” in Caldwell received warnings from New Jersey police after passing through intersections without stopping for pedestrians.
