Yesterday, the Suffolk County Legislature put the brakes on a plan that would have raised fares for Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT) riders by $1.
A resolution that would have brought public hearings on the proposed increase—tabled earlier this month—did not get enough votes to pass.
The proposed fare hike was part of County Executive Steve Bellone’s deficit mitigation plan, which set its sights on Suffolk’s $530 million budget gap, but the measure attracted the attention of lawmakers and advocates.
“We don’t want to balance the books on the backs of the disabled,” said Legislator Jay Schneiderman, who has been integral in the fight for SCAT customers.
Legislator Kara Hahn also stood up for paratransit riders, voting against the resolution.
“This is not a population we need to be coming after,” she said.
