Winners and Losers

Your weekly guide to heroic and villainous actions in tri-state transportation and development.

Winners

Kate Slevin—After 10 years with Tri-State, Kate will be leaving us to join NYCDOT as the assistant commissioner for intergovernmental affairs, serving as the agency’s liaison between the City Council, State Legislature and other government agencies.  Congratulations to Kate, and thank you for all of your incredible work and leadership at Tri-State over the past decade.

Mayor of Carlstadt, New Jersey, William Roseman, and the Carlstadt Borough Council—The Carlstadt Borough Council passed a resolution Thursday night which calls for a thorough traffic analysis of the impacts of American Dream Meadowlands and urges its developer, Triple Five, to support additional NJ Transit service to the development.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy—Governor Malloy announced a new state program “that will help municipalities attract small businesses, promote commercial activity and increase local job numbers by providing grants for infrastructure renovations and improvements to town commercial centers.” Key criteria prioritizes funding towards improvements that enhance walkability and public transportation access.

Losers

Kate Slevin—After 10 years with Tri-State, Kate will be abandoning us and toning down her advocacy rhetoric, to join NYCDOT as the assistant commissioner for intergovernmental affairs, serving as the agency’s liaison between the City Council, State Legislature and other government agencies.

Mayor Bloomberg–The Mayor was criticized by elected officials and community groups after he said the Sheridan Expressway should stay. The groups said the decision was premature: a $1.5 million federal study, analyzing impacts of  removing the redundant roadway, was not fully completed. The Mayor cited traffic impacts in the community as the reason, even though the administration pushed for Fresh Direct’s relocation to the South Bronx—a deal criticized by groups like TSTC for bringing additional truck traffic to the area.
