Two of the region’s premiere events celebrating smart growth are next month.
NJ Future’s 2011 Smart Growth Awards will take place on June 9 at the Newark Club in Newark, NJ; early bird admission prices ($100 for an individual ticket) end tomorrow. This year’s award winners include the Hoboken Housing Authority; the Byran Village Center; Cracker Factory redevelopment in Trenton; and James Gilbert of Merill Lynch.
Registration has also opened up for Vision Long Island’s 10th Annual Smart Growth Awards, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY on June 17. This year’s honorees include:
- State Senator Carl Marcellino and Assm. Sam Hoyt, for their leadership on last year’s state Smart Growth Public Infrastructure Act;
- The Town of Babylon and Supervisor Steve Bellone for the Wyandanch Rising plan, which seeks to redevelop one of Long Island’s poorest communities;
- Adrienne Esposito of the Citizens Campaign for the Environment for her work on open space;
- John Durso and Roger Clayman of the LI Federation of Labor for their work on transportation, including the fight for LI Bus.
Totally applaud both of these groups for their work, but it just struck me as odd that Vision Long Island would hold its event at a country club that’s miles from anything remotely approaching smart growth.
