Starting Tomorrow: New York City Streets, Car-Free

The first of New York City’s Summer Streets car-free Saturdays runs from 7am to 1pm tomorrow, August 9. The car-free route runs along stretches of Park Avenue, 4th Avenue, and Lafayette Street between 72nd St. and the Brooklyn Bridge (route is outlined in orange at right; for more details visit the official website here).

There will be races, group runs and rides, fitness classes, and cultural events along the route. Also look out for bike share stations and bike repair at the 51st St, 24th St., and Cleveland Place “rest stops.” NYCDOT will give out free bike helmets at 24th Street beginning at 9am.

Transportation Alternatives will be running “feeder rides” for cyclists to the event from Astoria, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Park Slope, and the Upper West Side. Details on how to RSVP have been posted at Streetsblog.

Tomorrow is also the final “Williamsburg Walks” Saturday of the summer, with Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn closed to cars between Metropolitan Avenue and N. 9th Street.
