Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in the tri-state region and beyond.

WINNERS

New York State Senator Andrew Lanza – A transparency bill sponsored by Senator Lanza, which would require the New York State Department of Transportation to submit an annual list of capital projects as well as 5- and 20-year plans, much like the MTA, was passed unanimously in the Senate.

Weston, CT resident Ray Rauth — Rauth, who is a member of the Connecticut Bicycle and Pedestrian Advocacy Board, is walking 120 miles along Route 1Connecticut’s most deadly road for walking–to raise awareness for pedestrian safety.

Citi Bike riders — For trips within Midtown, Citi Bike trips are quicker and cheaper compared to vehicular travel.

LOSERS

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie — New Jersey’s Transportation Trust Fund runs dry in less than two weeks, but Governor Christie is more interested in securing tax cuts.

New York City Councilmember I. Daneek Miller — Councilmember Miller–a vocal adversary to toll reform on the East River bridges–again voiced his opposition to Move NY, claiming an overwhelming majority of his constituents drive and would be adversely affected by the plan.

The planet — Transportation is now the largest single source of carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S., surpassing power plant emissions for the first time since 1979.
