Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in tri-state transportation news.

Winners

Fairfield, Connecticut — The Town of Fairfield received a $1.2 million grant from the federal Transportation Alternatives Program which will be used to build new sidewalks, improved medians and bicycle parking along Kings Highway East.

Montclair Center BID — Downtown New Jersey, a statewide nonprofit dedicated to ensuring the vitality of New Jersey downtowns, recognized the Montclair Center Business Improvement District for its pedestrian wayfinding system.

Staten Island bus commuters — The MTA has installed two electronic BusTime signs at bus stops in Stapleton and New Dorp.

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania — Lawmakers in the Keystone State passed a transportation bill that raises the state gas tax and prioritizes fix-it-first and transit improvements.

Losers

Uptown bike commuters — An uptown section of the Hudson River Greenway that was supposed to re-open on November 30 will remain closed until March, the New York City Parks Department learned late last month.

The National Football League — Transportation options for fans staying in East Rutherford near MetLife Stadium for the Super Bowl: purchase a $150 parking pass and drive or take a shuttle to Secaucus and then pay $51 per person for a shuttle to the game. Walking, biking, getting dropped off, or taking a taxi or a hotel-operated shuttle (all of which are allowed for regular season games) are prohibited on Super Bowl Sunday.

NYPD’s 10th Precinct — The Chelsea area precinct, which writes an average of only one speeding ticket per week, has “assigned a traffic safety officer to specifically focus on handing out summonses to rogue riders in the bike lanes.”
