Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in tri-state transportation news.

Winners

Jersey City — The Jersey City Council voted unanimously to use $1 million to implement a bicycle infrastructure plan, which Mayor Fulop has said is forthcoming, and for which cyclists have been waiting.

City of Hartford — The City of Hartford is pushing for $7 million in grants for downtown street improvements, including wider sidewalks and raised crosswalks.

New York City cyclists — Even the Daily News has acknowledged that when it comes to bicycling in New York City, there’s safety in numbers.

City of Newark — Crashes at intersections where red light cameras have been installed fell by 64 percent in Newark, according to a preliminary study.

Losers

New York City Department of Education — The DOE advised the principal of I.S. 73 in Maspeth, where five teenage students were hit by a curb jumping SUV were headed, to send a letter to parents that warned students not to wear headphones or use electronic devices while walking, as if pedestrians are to blame when motorists drive on sidewalks.

National Motorists Association — Steve Carrellas, the National Motorists Association’s New Jersey delegate, cast doubt on the role red light cameras have played in reducing crashes at intersections where they’ve been installed in Newark.

Urban New Jersey counties — Because the Christie Administration and the New Jersey Legislature continue to lack the political will to find sustainable revenue sources for transportation, urban counties like Hudson, Bergen and Passaic will receive less road maintenance funding than they have in the past.
