Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in tri-state transportation news.

Winners

West Haven, Connecticut — The City celebrated the opening of a new Metro-North station earlier this week.

New Jersey Department of Transportation — NJDOT is looking to put Route 71 in Asbury Park on a road diet by reducing the four-lane thoroughfare to three lanes and adding bike lanes.

Hamburg, New York — The western New York village resisted a 2001 NYSDOT plan to widen its Main Street, and has since thrived.

Amazon — The online mega-store will fund the construction of a protected bike lane near its Seattle headquarters, “raising the stakes for what companies can do to encourage bicycle commuting.”

Losers

NYSDOT — According to the New York State Department of Transportation, “it’s premature to engage the community” in planning safety improvements for Sunrise Highway. “Let’s wait to see what the recommendations are and then people can weigh in,” a spokesperson told Newsday.

NYPD  — The cab driver who “accidentally” scooped a cyclist onto his hood before driving onto a sidewalk and maiming a tourist in Manhattan yesterday has been issued nothing more than “an administrative summons for unauthorized operation of his vehicle.”
