Statement of Tri-State Transportation Campaign executive director, Veronica Vanterpool, on the New York State Legislature’s passage of speed camera enforcement technology.

With the passage of a speed camera pilot program by the New York State Senate early this morning, the New York Legislature has endorsed a measure that prioritizes safety on New York City’s streets for some of its most vulnerable users: children. The legislation (A4327-A/S4459-A) authorizes the use of speed cameras around 20 NYC schools to combat the number one killer on New York City streets: speeding.

Our streets have been used as speedways for too long and the long list of fatalities from speeding cars over the years is irrefutable evidence that more tools are needed to make our streets safer. Speed cameras will bolster existing law enforcement practices and complement traffic calming measures to ensure our roadways are safer for everyone who uses them in New York City. In locations where they have been placed around the country, they have significantly reduced traffic deaths and serious injuries by 30 to 40 percent.

They are an additional measure in a toolkit towards safer streets, not a replacement for existing law enforcement. Speeding cars take so many lives, cause so many injuries, and make too many of our streets perilous for all users of the road: pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. After years of insurmountable proof that speeding can be thwarted, the NYS Assembly and Senate have finally taken a first step in preventing these needless deaths.

We applaud the champions of this bill, Assemblywoman Glick and Senator Klein in the state legislature and thank all who supported the legislation as well as our allies for their ardent support of this bill. We look forward to Governor Cuomo signing this important legislation as soon as possible.

“to combat the number one killer on New York City streets: speeding.” When Cuomo needed to pass his anti-gun law, supposedly ‘assault-style rifles’ were the biggest threat to safety in NYS.
