Wednesday Winners (& Losers)

A weekly roundup of good deeds, missteps, heroic feats and epic failures in tri-state transportation news.

Winners

Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages — Solages, a champion for transit in Nassau County, successfully led the effort to improve service on the much maligned N6 and reinstate a bus stop along the route that was removed when the Nassau Inter-County Express bus system made service cuts in April 2012.

Somerset County, NJ — County officials unveiled a .5-mile multi-use path segment that connects to the 2.5 mile Peters Brook Greenway. When completed, the path will eventually connect Bridgewater to Somerville via Raritan Borough.

New York City Council Progressive Caucus — The 11-member group of councilmembers are pushing for major upgrades to bus rapid transit and a new approach to fairer toll pricing.

Greenwich, CT pedestrians — The Greenwich Board of Selectmen recently approved the conversion of 10 intersections from exclusive to concurrent pedestrian phasing. Now pedestrians won’t have to push a button or wait as long for a “walk” signal. Including leading pedestrian intervals at the intersections is an additional safety improvement that Greenwich should consider.

Losers

NY State Senator Marty Golden — “I have no idea.” That was State Senator Golden’s response when he was asked why life-saving speed cameras were not included in the New York State budget. Golden, a retired NYC police officer, teamed up with the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association to lobby against the provision because he believes, despite the facts, that only cops on the street can tame speeders.

Car commuters — A study recently published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine concluded that people who walk or bike to work gain less weight than car commuters.
