Public Hearing on Pedestrian/Cyclist Pathway in Rye

Rye's planned sharrows could be joined by a bicyclist/pedestrian pathway from the Metro-North station to Playland Park

In Rye, NY—where sharrows will be coming to Forest Avenue—pedestrians and cyclists may soon have more to celebrate.

Tomorrow at 7p.m., at Rye City Hall, the Planning Department of the County of Westchester will host a public hearing on a plan to develop a pedestrian/cyclist pathway from the town’s Metro-North station to Playland Park.

The pathway would provide a safe route for bicyclists and pedestrians to get to the popular Playland amusement park and the future Westchester Children’s Museum, which will be housed in a historic bathhouse at the park. Though Bee-Line runs bus service to the venue during the summer, many visitors find its limited schedule a deterrent, making access to the park without a car difficult. The proposed pathway would provide a viable transportation choice for the 850,000 visitors to Playland each year.

The pathway would also further solidify support for pedestrian and cyclist safety and infrastructure in Westchester County, where sharrows are becoming more common.

“Many have felt that Westchester County has tended to lag in its acceptance of current complete streets-type thinking.  Here is a test case where it’s critical we show that there is wide support across the county for these types of programs,” said Bike Walk Alliance member Steve Cadenhead, a leading supporter of the pathway.

The meeting begins at 7p.m. on March 27. It will be held at Rye City Hall.
