Eastchester Embraces Low-Cost Bike Infrastructure

Across the tri-state region, communities are embracing initiatives that make their streets safer for bicyclists while costing little. One recent example is the Town of Eastchester, New York. On July 1, Eastchester workers painted sharrows along California Road between New Rochelle Road and Route 22. Sharrows are pictograms that tell bicyclists they are on a relatively safe route and remind drivers to share the road. Eastchester is the first municipality in Westchester County to use sharrows, according to Eastchester Environmental Committee Chair Peter McCartt.

The Committee, an advocacy group, first brought the idea of sharrows to Supervisor Colavita about a year ago. The initiative received support from Town Supervisor Colavita and the Eastchester Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee, the town Police Department, and the town Department of Public Works.

Supervisor Tony Colavita told the Town Report that Eastchester may extend the bike route across town and add more bike racks next year.

Eastchester is not the only municipality in Westchester to embrace biking. New Rochelle passed a landmark bike parking ordinance last year and has made cycling a key part of its proposed sustainability plan.

That’s quite appreciable step taken by Town Supervisor Colavita and the Eastchester Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee. I’ve never heard the sharrows before.
