The highest-profile vehicular incident in Manhattan this year was the death of preschoolers Diego Martinez and Hayley Ng, who were struck by an idling van left unattended by its driver. No charges were filed.

With Robert Morganthau stepping down after almost a quarter-century as Manhattan’s district attorney, New Yorkers have an opportunity to reflect on the way many types of crimes have been prosecuted, including traffic crimes.

With that in mind, Transportation Alternatives and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law’s Criminal Justice Society will present a debate on the district attorney’s role in prosecuting vehicular crimes in New York City on June 3 from 8:30-9:30am in the Moot Court Room, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, 55 Fifth Avenue (at 12th St.). The debate features all three announced Manhattan DA candidates: Cyrus Vance, Leslie Crocker Snyder, and Richard Aborn.

The free event will be moderated by Cardozo professor Jonathan Oberman with introductory remarks by Aaron Naparstek of Streetsblog, which has extensively covered vehicular crimes in NYC, as well as the rarity of prosecutions.
