Future of Orange County Transit to be Discussed Monday

This Monday, Metro-North will join NJ Transit, NYSDOT, and the Port Authority in hosting an open house for its “West of Hudson Regional Transit Access Study,” which focuses on improving transit in Orange County.

Now is the time to plan. According to NYMTC, Orange County’s population is expected to grow by 42% by 2030 (compared to 2005), with job growth of 37% in the same time period. The Port Authority’s takeover of Stewart Airport could eventually mean major expansion of the facility.

Orange County also needs to determine how to best take advantage of planned megaprojects. NJ Transit’s Access to the Region’s Core project would give Orange County residents one-seat rides to Manhattan, as would a new commuter rail line planned as part of the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project.

Journal News columnist Bob Baird yesterday urged Hudson Valley residents to give their feedback on the 80 different transit proposals the study is examining, which include double-tracking the Port Jervis Line, building rail access to Stewart, expanded bus and ferry services, and many others.

The open house will take place from 4-8pm on December 8 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Newburgh (presentations at 4:30 and 6:30). For more information, read about the study here.
