I am flabbergasted! I live in Nassau county and depend on L.I. Bus to get around and to appointments. A $3 fare for less service? I already deal with jam packed buses which are always LATE. The buses breakdown too much, and they dont run often enough. And our Nassau elected officials are indifferent!
I call my elected officials in Nassau as well as state leg, they just say "well would you like higher taxes?" when I ask them to pass the Ravicth plan.
I see plenty of people filling up their GMC Yukon XL's, if they can afford to gas up that thing they can afford the ravitch plan.

Tom, thanks for commenting. The MTA plan raises the fare by 23%, then says that if Nassau County doesn't increase its contribution, LI Bus would be on the hook for another 20% increase.

That is basically the same as a 43% fare increase, which is why it's described that way in many other publications. For a story that looks in-depth at the MTA budget documents, however, we felt we should be as accurate as possible.

The proposed fare increase for Nassau County MTA buses is not 23%, it is 43% which means that the fare will probably go up to $3 (and paratransit fares will triple to $6 each way).

The Nassau fare increase is more than the rest of the MTA (and Bee-Line, which will follow the NYC fare increase) because Nassau County is not subsidizing the system enough.
