We ran the system into the ground in the 1970's. The debt is for a complete transformation of the system. It is for infrastructure which will survive for generations. That is good debt. The TARP, the bailouts and the subprime is for bad debt. What exactly do we have to show for it?

The reason the MTA has such an enormous debt is because of all the borrowing the MTA did during the Pataki administration. Those bills have now become due, and a huge portion of the budget now goes to paying off that debt and the huge interest on that debt. When Carl McCall warned about this issue when he ran against Pataki, he was completely ignored. Governor Pataki was universally endorsed at that time by every newspaper, politician (including Democrats). and union. It's ironic that the person in this photo is holding up a sign saying "I VOTE." Well, New Yorkers weren't paying attention and didn't care when it really mattered. Voting now isn't going to erase the mistakes from the past.
