Sam Crane Named to Smart Freight Railroad Study Commission

Congratulations to TSTC board member Sam Crane, who was recently nominated to serve as a transportation expert on the NJ Smart Freight Railroad Study Commission.

The 10-member Commission is charged with conducting a comprehensive study of whether there is a need for the reactivation and construction of short-line freight railroads in northern New Jersey. The Commission will determine whether the potential for economic growth from the expansion of the rail lines justifies the cost to the State and the environment, as well as the impact on the quality of life of nearby communities.

Although the commission was statutorily established in January 2006, only one member, State Sen. Barbara Buono, has been confirmed by the NJ State Senate. Governor Corzine announced the nomination of Sam Crane and two other members last Friday, leaving six seats empty. Crane will fill the position of Transportation Expert, Robert Bailey will represent the rail freight industry, and Jacqueline B. Kates will represent the New Jersey League of Municipalities. The remaining seats are reserved for two members of the New Jersey Assembly, one member of the Senate, a member of the “environmental community,” and one member of a community-based organization.
